What Is a Miniature Highland Cow?

The miniature highland cow is a small, hardy breed of cattle. These cows can withstand harsh, cold temperatures in the winter and hot temperatures in the summer as long as they have adequate water and shade. Miniature highland cows tend to be docile and calm, and they make great outdoor companions. Because of their gentle, easygoing nature and affectionate personalities, they are becoming increasingly popular as petting zoo and companion animals. They tend to enjoy being around people and other animals.

Where Did the Miniature Highland Cow Originate?

Miniature highland cows originate from the highland cattle of the Scottish highlands. The highland cattle breed is originally from the Hebrides Island and the Isle of the Sky. Highland cattle were a smaller and hardier breed of cattle that did well in the harsh Scottish highlands. Over time, they were selectively bred to be a bit larger. However, in modern times, the original, smaller size is now more prominent. Miniature highland cattle are even smaller than regular highland cattle, though they still maintain many of the same characteristics as their larger counterparts.

What Are Their Physical Characteristics?

Miniature highland cows are most known for their physical characteristics. They are typically about 36 inches tall, though their height can vary by a few inches depending on the type. A micro mini will stay around 36 inches or shorter, whereas a midsize miniature can reach 42 to 48 inches tall. A regular miniature will remain between 36 and 42 inches. A mature miniature highland cow will typically weigh anywhere between 500 and 700 pounds.

These miniature cows are known for their shaggy coats that give them a fluffy, adorable appearance. These coats can range from wavy to very curly in texture. Most miniature highlands have solid-colored coats that can be red, white, black, dun, yellow, or silver. However, due to cross-breeding, some of these cows may have spotted or tipped coats. Miniature highland cows are also known for their long, sweeping horns.
